Silence speaks volumes…

Dear Squallers,

Due to largely, somewhat, kind of unforseen circumstances (now there’s a euphemism) we feel unable to carry on with Southern Squall.

Thank you to everyone for the comments, of all persuasion, and the support. This may not be the last post – but until the mist lifts, we will remain silent.

Cheers.

  1. You bastards. Where will I get the gossip from now? And I kinda liked the gang feeling. Now I’m gonna get the shit kicked out of me!
But hey – it’s happened plenty of times before…come back soon

  2. Ah “something is rotten in the state of Denmark”

  3. Damn!!! And it’s election year too – get your ass into gear and come back soon – all is forgiven!!!

  4. as a daily reader of this sight i am sorry to see that you a pulling the plug..
with no rate payers ass; in invercargill this was a way the public could have there say..
there are many things that go on that with out public imput its a done deal.. ring your councillors and keep on there tail..
thanks for your great work …thelma buck.. (and as one of your readers called me the lame duck)

  5. Dear squallers, like Thelma I am sad to see you pulling the plug, or is that having the plug pulled!!!!

I hear some gossip and I will follow up.

Hope there is a reincarnation soon.

  6. Rachael Goldsmith

Oh no!!! Please don’t pull the plug – Carl and I love logging in to enjoy some real journalism. Hope you are back online soon!

  7. Dam shame you guys are staying silent.I know the towns so small that you can hardly say boo without offending somebody, but you guys were doing a great job and it would be sad to see it end over some silly spilt milk incident.Come back or someone else might take the spot.

  8. Enjoy your sabbatical gentlemen. We enjoyed your contributions to the fund of unauthorised opinions, we will miss this opportunity
for expressions of ‘me too’, we look forward to your early return but above all we question the ‘circumstances’ that have brought about
    your decision.

  9. Shame that the intrepid reporters/reports of the alternative southern news? Are on hold ? Have you been subjected to bullying tactics, threats, intimidation in your respective vocational roles or what ??? You provided a platform of public forum, debate, argument and discussion. Right or wrong in your opinion or assertions its allowed an alternative platform. I would be really pee’d if the corporates/wage masters are dictating and or laundering your once provocative/ stimulating opinions. Is there anyway I and your other supporters can assist? Just call.

  10. One Fine Weasel

I hope the irrepressible Squallers haven’t been repressed… come back soon.

  11. Oh no. What happened?!

  12. …..was it something I said ????………

  13. This is why Invercargill will never change.

    They win again…

  14. Even though we are not blessed with the squall guys wisdom I would like to hear the wisdom or views of other ‘squallers’.
I appealed ICC’s decision to stick with ‘At Large’ voting system during the last Rep Rev. I have a hearing with LG Commission on Wednesday in regards to my appeal. I advocated for a mixed system and would like to hear any other views that either reinforce or dispel my view.

  15. I haven’t dropped past for a while…. and it’s all over rover? A shame that, for whatever reason you have had to pull the pin gang. You’d rapidly become a yardstick of sorts, to sort the crap from the clay, but can understand that “Evil forces” will have been at play from the outset.
I’d imagine the usual persuasions of the thin skinned who really run what happens in our city, have played a part here.
Come back… but in the meantime, good on ya, for having been there at all.

  16. This is real bad news guys.
Your site has a wide spread of community participants following with interest your news and particularly your views. It is supported and discussed in various circles.
As other followers have suggested my first conclusion is that someone, some where, some how, may have put pressure on you to do this. These happens all to often in this small town (city’s have a population of over 50k) where some people with self preservation instincts who have positions related to funding, personal income and other interests fell threatened by the use of democracy such as you show, can from the shadows and underhandly put pressure directly or indirectly on you to stop.
I hope this is not the case here but if it is it shows that you are pushing buttons that need to be pushed. Here’s hoping that you are only going to take a small break coming back soon.

  17. Man this site would go off at the moment with the whole mayoral race and all.Pleeeeeaaasssee come back.

  18. Unfortunately if they did come back it would be no good, as the Council has gone into committee to vote for the entire local body election process being carried out under the Local Government Official Information and Meetings Act 1987.
Thus the only information available to guide voters will be what the mayoral candidates eat for breakfast, what they like most about Invercargill, oysters v toheroas, and whom they would invite to their ideal dinner party.
In the event of one candidate not gaining a clear mandate, a dance-off in Wachner Place will be held to garner the most publicity possible. Council also voted $100,000 to paint Wachner Place and install a disco ball.

  19. Thanks Paddy, for shedding some light on the process council intend using leading up to election time. Funny how the words like transperant, up front and honest don’t seem to count when interest runs high ay? Is the ICC council the only one heading down this path?
And!! $100,000 to paint Wachner place?? As a painter in a previous life, it requires a wash down, bit of a sand here and there, a primecoat and 2 topcoats. I’d guess at maybe 6 tubs of paint and a couple of fine days…. there must be approx $90,000 going in “sundries” .
Some one is being robbed, by letting contracts like this that are totally overblown. It’s paint…. not gold leaf … oh yeh… that’d be the ratepayers being stung, so that’s ok huh?

  20. Has the mist lifted yet?
    We’ve been waiting sooooo long!
